“My Chef” was my first stop-motion project. I wanted to portray a clumsy chef who wanted to cook a delicious dish but had no idea what he was doing. Working on this project was extremely rewarding, I learnt a variety of techniques, made 2 kinds of puppet, and experimented with numerous materials. However, the process of production was time-consuming and challenging.
In “My Chef”, I used Monster Clay to sculpt the character, cement to make molds, and foam latex to create the soft body and limbs. Despite my efforts, the results did not completely match my expectations. After baking the molds, some parts of the body shrank and became stiff and hard to animate. In short, “My Chef” was an extremely interesting project and valuable learning opportunity.
“The City of Frog”, a.k.a. “The City of Fog”, depicts a not so distant world, where the air pollution has gotten so hideous that everyone has to wear a mask to protect themselves from the toxins. Without supervision, the exhaust fume from factories and cars polluted the whole world. I drew my inspiration from a recent visit to Beijing in 2014, where I observed how serious the smog has become.
“The City of Frog” was selected to screen at the Los Angeles CineFest, Montreal International Animation Festival, and TMFF. It is my hope that this short animated piece could raise some awareness to save the world we live in.
“Japanese Hot Spring” is one of my projects done during the second year in the animation program. It is an animated advertisement that promotes special anti-fog glasses.
“Wild” was a group project done in teams. Each group member has to animate a fox, a turtle, and a bird in order to demonstrate how these animals act in their natural habitat, while using different techniques and styles.
“War” is an abstract animation. I used ink and colorful lights to create random patterns on paper or wall. Then, by using a digital camera, I took photos of these patterns. After, I modified the colors of photos into different red in Premiere, and combined them together following the rhythm of a series of violent sound effects.
